Review of Southern Comfort

Stunning documentary of gender pioneers in "Bubba" country. Director Kate Davis tackles the minority subject matter with skill and integrity. It follows the story of a female to male transgender person, living in an area of extreme prejudice, and eventually contracting terminal cancer (ironically, of the female internal organs that were not removed in his transition to female). The film has great emotional depth, but most interestingly helps the ordinary viewer come to terms with prejudice, embarrassment and the ignorance that goes with such a subject for most of us. Won top awards at Sundance and the San Francisco film festival.
