An awe-inspiring homage to ‘women's movies' of a bygone period, this beautifully shot tear-jerker is filmed in the manner and style of movie-making in the 50's, even to details like the rear- projection, but entirely devoid of sentiment and tackling issues of black right and gay rights head on with a self-destructive fervour. Julianne Moore shines as the perfect housewife trapped in a flawed American dream.
