Film Review of Dirty Dancing
Year: 1987 Reviewer: Chris Docker
This movie gets a higher rating from me than it would otherwise mostly because I enjoy modern jive and especially the type of dancing that the movie popularised. Swayze actually toned down his dancing for the character - if you see him in the teaching video "Swayze Dancing" you realise he's a much better dancer - not surprising as he's devoted his life to it for many years, far more than acting. Swayze's mother is a world-class instructor. So the rather cheesy movie can be seen simply as a vehicle for Swayze's style of dancing. That normally wouldn't mean it made the grade as a great movie, but when it has had such a great impact on the dance world it maybe has to be taken a little more seriously. One of my all-time favourites - but only for the dancing!
