Film Review of Dans ma peau
Year: 2002 Reviewer: Chris Docker
A disturbing yet poetic film about self-mutilation (nine people walked out during some of the more graphic scenes at the Edinburgh International Film Festival Premiere). In a superb tour de force, Marina de Van writes, directs and plays the principal role of a young woman who develops an almost sensuous fascination with self-harm that verges on auto-cannibalism. The subject is treated seriously, but contains as much gore as many a horror movie. Pushing the graphics to the limit, I'm told that de Van actually inflicted most of the cuts on herself rather than use special effects.
