Film Review of City by the Sea
Year: 2002 Reviewer: Chris Docker
Heartfelt performances as De Niro wrings lots of gut-wrenching emotion from the character of a cop-near-retirement who has to track a son he deserted and has now become a drug addict and murder suspect. Excellent marriage of images as the run-down coastal area of New York (Long Beach) and the more familiar warmth of Manhattan form a neat analogy and backdrop to the main characters. This is a gentle, warming, film, told at a relaxed pace. It is a little too full to be a great movie but there's some good performances and neat touches that can make it quite rewarding viewing all the same.
